LESSONS FROM THE ISLE OF ISOLATION

“Hello Good-morning”

“Calling from the Epidemiology unit of the Hospital”

“I’m Dr Popoola and contact tracing has begun as regarding the index case here in UITH”.

“Oh alright sir” I quietly replied as a whole lot was being processed in my head.

“So this thing is really here in UITH?”

Prior to this, my dad had sent a video to me telling me to be careful and to take utmost precaution. Even though I appreciated him, I thought, “this thing isn’t even in Nigeria not to talk about Ilorin”.

“So you’re to proceed on Isolation immediately”, he added after taking a comprehensive bio-data and asking for symptoms.

I was in the Neurosurgery unit at the time

and I was honestly enjoying my work there, so you can imagine how sad it was for me to hear that I was going to be home. However, I understood that it was more important for me to stay back at least. While I was home, these lessons came alive:

1) Nothing is more important in Life than making Heaven: Do you know how many visas have been cancelled with people grounded and unable to travel? Do you know how many weddings have been postponed even though some people are fine with a small number and have gone ahead with their wedding plans? But amidst all these, we have people who are dead and their end will be determined by how they’ve lived their lives on earth. This reminds us that as we journey, each day our lives should count for eternity which is the ultimate.

2) A leveller: This Pandemic is a Leveler. It respects no one, the rich, poor, young and old are subject to its pang, even healthcare providers are not spared. I’m pretty sure some individuals who are now infected never thought they would be.

3) The Golden rule: Truly the saying what goes around comes around has come to play as the rich have nowhere to run to and have no other option than to receive care from the poor health care system they created. As we live our lives, let us not be selfish but thoughtful of others treating them as we would treat ourselves. We are commanded to love our neighbours as ourselves so let’s imbibe that.

4) Our help is from God: A lot of people were hoping for the next month’s salary and were told to go home because they wouldn’t be paid. Some were promised money by the rich and because of some financial loss, the rich are not able to help. This just shows that life happens and in a jiffy what we’ve placed so much hope on might go in the opposite. This teaches us to always depend on God’s grace and to see him as our absolute helper.

5) A blessing in disguise: I recall a conversation I had with my chiefs before I was told to go on isolation, one of them had said that the economy is destroyed and the other felt that on the contrary there is redistribution. Some people earn more at this time and gain from those who are loosing. Many families will reunite. Couples will pay attention to each another and many children will have their parents more present, so this period to some is a blessing.

And at this period this verse of the scriptures came alive.

Philippians 4:6,7

Do not be anxious or worried about anything, but in everything [every circumstance and situation] by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, continue to make your [specific] requests known to God. And the peace of God [that peace which reassures the heart, that peace] which transcends all understanding, [that peace which] stands guard over your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus [is yours

Howww?

The second part will be up here next week.
