FAITH Life Experiences Parenting Words of Godliness

STRUGGLING WITH LOW SELF ESTEEM AND COMPARISON

I wasn’t the most confident girl growing up. No, I did not have significant issues with self esteem. I was just an okay girl.

But I feel like even the most confident girl has her moments when she begins to question herself. Can I stretch it further to say we all do?

It could be the pressure parents put on us, sometimes harmlessly to be like the girl next door, to be like the daughter of this family in church, to be like that girl who always tops the class, after all she doesn’t have two heads. Sometimes it’s the extremely perfect I have it all together lives we see on Instagram. Sometimes it’s that girl who always seems to have the nicest things. Other times it’s the not so perfect lives we’ve led. A lot of times, it’s the body we wish we were born with or the imperfections we wish we could just wake up the next day without. Don’t we all wish we had super model figures?

How about the innocent group jokes that we were just unfortunate to be the centre of? Maybe you were bullied or criticized a lot.
I’m not quite there yet but I’ve made a lot of progress. God’s word healed me and still is healing me because it’s so alive. That’s what I want to share with you today. Let’s pretend we’re having girl talk(one of my absolute favourite things). So, grab a virtual seat.

COUNSEL FOR THE CHRISTIAN GIRL STRUGGLING WITH LOW SELF-ESTEEM AND COMPARISON

1. Your identity is in Christ

As cliché as this might sound, it is absolutely true. One thing that stands out in the book of Ephesians is, “In him…” In Christ.

It’s not in our physique, abilities, professions, past, mistakes, background, strengths or even weaknesses.

You might want to check out Ephesians to remind yourself of who you are in Christ.

2. Ground yourself in God’s truth and counsel yourself accordingly
Psalm 139 verse 13 to 15 (AMP) says,
“For You formed my innermost parts; You knit me [together] in my mother’s womb.
I will give thanks and praise to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, And my soul knows it very well.

My frame was not hidden from You, When I was being formed in secret, And intricately and skilfully formed [as if embroidered with many colours] in the depths of the earth.”

God’s word says to you:
“I have redeemed you… I have called you by name. You are Mine! … You are precious in My eyes and honoured and I love you.” (Isaiah 43:1, 4) AMP

God is so mindful of you, dear sister. When you realize these truths, speak them to yourself, pray, and believe.
It’s a process, but God will show you who you truly are and other things pale in comparison.

3. Surround yourself with like-minded sisters who draw you up and point you to God and the truth of His Word.

I’ve come to believe, through experience, that community and fellowship are very important. God knows this and he has made provisions for us. There’s a healing that comes from fellowship. Embrace it.
“Two are better than one because they have a more satisfying return for their labour; for if either of them falls, the one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and does not have another to lift him up.” (Ecclesiastes 4:11)
This doesn’t only apply to marriages.

4. Be careful where your eyes are

“…my eyes are not raised too high.” (Psalm 131:1b) ESV

Because if they are, then you give room for discontent and ingratitude.

When your eyes are focused on others, everything God has made you, blessed you with, and given to you becomes insignificant.
Godliness with contentment is great gain.
Maybe it doesn’t come easily for you and that’s okay; we are flesh (we are human). The good news is in Psalm 103 verse 14, God knows our frame, and He remembers that we are dust. So ask Him to help you.

5. Bring every thought to the obedience of Christ.
Our minds are powerful. Satan can take advantage of this and plant seeds. Don’t let him.

Whatever is true, just, right, honourable, commendable, confirmed by God’s word, pure, wholesome, lovely, brings peace, and worthy of praise, think on these things (Philippians 4:8).
Guard your heart with all diligence. Some translations will say watch over your heart, carefully guard your thoughts, and keep your heart with all vigilance (Proverbs 4:23).

Be careful how you think; your life is shaped by your thoughts.

  1. Hmm, this is deep truth. I hope every believer regardless of the gender can come to the reality of this truth.

As Christians. We have to continually make the scriptures our standard. May God help us.
